Maasai Music on iTunes?

According to Wired, the Maasai people are taking the first step to copyrighting their tribal tunes and twirls. The World Intellectual Property Organization, or the WIPO, gave the East African tribe a “laptop, camera and digital recorder” worth $11,000, believing the idea to be a “huge potential for communities to record, archive and also draw income from their cultural richness.” The Maasai are as much a part of East Africa […]

Quincy Jones: Savior of Music

In a recent article for the China Daily newspaper, Quincy Jones claimed he would ride with bravado against the 21st century’s dark knight, a phantom menace called copyright infringement, and rescue his beautiful maiden in distress, the haggard and threadbare music industry. From the article: “We are going to reinvent the record business, in China, because it’s dead,” the 76-year-old producer of Michael Jackson’s Thriller, which has sold over 100 […]

Halls of the Machine: What does Silence Sound Like?

We are finalizing the details for a new release that we are particularly excited about: the ambient instrumental group Halls of the Machine. Since several of the band members are local, we had the privilege to meet with two of them, Michael Jerome and Mike Graff, to learn about the project they conceived, recorded and produced at the end of their days with Course of Empire.

What Do Get Smart and SAM have in Common?

“I didn’t realize that Get Smart was a Mel Brooks production… but it’s obvious now,” I heard Clay say as I walked into the Control Room. Clay recently bought the DVDs for his wife, who used to watch the show frequently. As Clay and Paul, our chief engineer, deconstructed some old mixes in the control room, Clay mentioned this in passing. Once started on the subject of Get Smart, Paul, […]

Thoughts On NAB

Well, we’re back from Vegas.  We actually got back late Friday night, but this is the first chance I’ve had to sit down and write anything.  Those first few days back from a week out of the office are always a chaotic whirlwind of catch-up. First off I wanna say that it was a blast!  We had such a great time; met a lot of cool people.  Most importantly, we […]

We Have Our Winners!!

RTNDA and NAB are always great opportunities for seeing old friends, as well as making new ones. This year was particularly fun for us because around 3pm each day, we got to give away a Fender Road Worn guitar. Fresh crowds gathered around our booth, their fingers itching to run across the tattered frets… All in all, we had a great time at NAB/RTNDA, and so did the lucky winners […]

Al Capone – Singer/Songwriter/Gangster

“He never sang to the feds, but it turns out Al Capone had a song in his heart. All it took was a stint in Alcatraz to bring it out,” begins the KFWB article on the ruthless crime boss. “The gangster who supposedly orchestrated the 1929 Valentine’s Day Massacre,” composed a love song, “Madonna Mia,” perhaps for the Virgin Mary or his faifthul wife, while expiating his sins at the […]

New Music on Discovery

We just finished up a 3-part Discovery Channel series; “Cocaine Nation”, “Heroin Nation”, and “Meth Nation.”  It was a lot of fun.  They like a lot of music.  That doesn’t mean that Discovery has an extensive iTunes playlist, oh no.  Each 45 minute episode contained about 45 minutes of music. So yeah, the scores are pretty much wall-to-wall. The series explores the drug problems in our country.  Pretty compelling stuff. […]
