CNN Worldwide – Aiming For Gold: PyeongChang 2018
With the winter games at hand, we wanted to share a project our team at Stephen Arnold Music is really excited about – a custom music package, “Aiming For Gold”, created for CNN and airing on all of their channels worldwide. The music is featured in various promos, in-show segments, and athlete profile pieces.
Our objective was to sonically express the majesty and excitement of the winter games – and to musically capture the drama, inspiration, and passion found on the world’s biggest stage of international competition. The music features live, lush orchestration with players from the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra.

Another important element was to incorporate some distinctive Korean instrument textures into the music – such as the gayageum, janggu drums, and the daegeum flute.
Of particular interest was the way the Korean drums are played – a technique involving a group of drummers in syncopation, using their sticks to play the drum heads and the surrounding rim area, as well as clacking their sticks together.
Another interesting instrument used prominently in the music package is the gayageum, a traditional Korean zither-like string instrument with 12-21 strings.
