SAM Sounds of the 70’s
Next up in our nostalgia-inspired series exploring the sounds of different decades, we take a listen to the 1970’s.
The 70’s was a colorful decade in sound. It was the last true era where creativity was not heavily influenced by digital technology. Analog ruled the day, and the experience of sound took center stage.
Starting with the music, everything felt big, loud, and unapologetic. Artistry and creativity were celebrated. Live concerts were at the forefront as musicians like James Brown, Marvin Gaye, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Carole King, David Bowie, The Ramones, Bob Marley, Miles Davis, Kraftwerk and many more, opened our ears to new possibilities in popular music. And genres like Funk, Disco, Soul, Rock, Glam, and Reggae took shape.
Technology in the 70’s pushed the bounds of analog equipment and gave listeners a more detailed audio experience. Recording and reproduction quality improved, fueling the popularity of hi-fidelity home stereo systems as well as powerful automotive sound systems. It wasn’t enough to just hear the music – we had to hear every detail, and at the highest volume.
Portability was also on the rise. 8-track systems helped take music beyond the living room and expanded the possibilities of on-demand audio, particularly in the car. Cassettes continued that evolution throughout the decade, and the introduction of the Sony Walkman in 1979 offered a glimpse of an even more portable listening experience.
Product sounds of the 70’s remained largely mechanical. Listening back, the sounds of everyday devices like typewriters, rotary phones, cash registers, and pinball machines feel particularly nostalgic given the prevalence of digital audio today.
Brands too leaned into the bold, colorful sound of the 70’s, particularly with jingles aimed at capturing attention and building recall on radio and television. Popular campaigns like Alka-Seltzer’s “Plop, Plop, Fizz, Fizz,” Meow Mix’s “Meow, meow, meow, meow,” and Coca-Cola’s “I’d Like to Buy the World a Coke” were purposefully catchy and designed to make a big impact with limited air time.
TV themes were just as memorable. Shows like Happy Days, Monday Night Football, and The Carol Burnett Show used distinctive musical themes that decades later, can still transport us back.
Here are some of SAM’s favorite sounds from the 70’s featuring sonic branding and jingles from Alka-Seltzer, Coca-Cola, NBC, ABC, CBS, PBS, Monday Night Football, Meow Mix, Oscar Mayer, Band-Aid, Dr. Pepper, and McDonalds.
The sounds of the 70’s were colorful, creative, and impossible to ignore. From packed concert halls to hi-fi home stereos, unforgettable jingles, and the mechanical sounds of everyday life, the decade has a unique sonic identity all its own.
