SAM Creates the Soundtrack for CNN’s Coverage of America’s 250th
When CNN set out to reimagine its Fourth of July coverage for the country’s 250th birthday, the network didn’t just need a new look. It needed a new sound. That’s where Stephen Arnold Music (SAM) came in, composing a full custom music package to underscore CNN’s multi-day Celebrating 250 broadcast events, working in step with an all-new graphics package to give the network’s biggest summer programming event a fresh identity.
Coverage kicked off July 3 with Independence Eve Live with Anderson & Andy, a Times Square special hosted by Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen that included a midnight ball drop, before rolling into the flagship The Fourth in America: Celebrating 250 the next day — a daylong broadcast with live reports and fireworks from cities across the country, including a major presence on the National Mall. Performances from Chris Stapleton, Goo Goo Dolls, Charlie Puth, Chance the Rapper, Lil Wayne, Kane Brown, Jennifer Hudson, Lainey Wilson, Josh Grobin, ASR, Steve Aoki, Christina Aguilera and Maren Morris were woven throughout.
For SAM, the assignment carried two goals. “CNN wanted to do something new, fresh and special for the 250, but also to kick off a rebrand of their Fourth in America coverage going forward,” says Chad Cook, SAM president and creative director. “The result is a package built to serve this year’s milestone while giving CNN a reusable sonic identity for years of Independence Day coverage to come.”
A Theme Built on Familiar Melodies
At the center of the package is a main theme that runs through the broadcast in different forms — a soaring, orchestral arrangement pairing a driving string ensemble with triumphant brass and horns—giving the visuals a cinematic, movie-trailer quality rather than a typical news-broadcast sound. Modern percussion keeps the energy contemporary, while patriotic march textures, crisp snare rolls, and woodwinds tie the sound to tradition.
Day Time
Threaded through that theme are references to some of the country’s most recognizable patriotic songs. “The core melody is complemented by hints of The Star-Spangled Banner, Yankee Doodle, and America the Beautiful,” Cook says. “The melodic theme and The Star-Spangled Banner play off each other throughout the package. It’s done in a way that creates excitement and anticipation — you’re getting ready for the big event. It’s fun. Upbeat.”
Super Open
CNN’s Fourth in America “Super Open” unfolds in three musical acts. “Act One has a patriotic, celebratory feel that evokes the 1812 Overture,” Cook explains. “It teases the programming to come and the cities where coverage will originate.” Act Two shifts into a rock band version of America the Beautiful built to feature the musical artists performing on the broadcast. Act Three returns to a final brand theme statement.
Only Here In America
The fireworks finale called for something different: a vocal song called “Only Here In America”. “CNN’s creative team wanted a song that felt very American yet contemporary,” Cook says. The lyrics reference cities across the country, allowing CNN’s technical director to cut to live shots in New Orleans, New York, or elsewhere without breaking the song’s flow. It carries the same melodic motif as the rest of the package but plays more like a hit record.
